About GES
The Good Enough Start (GES) team is passionate about working alongside families to build strong and loving connections from the moment you find out you’re pregnant until your child turns 2. It’s not about being perfect— Our goal is for you to feel empowered and equipped to nurture that special bond and feel confident that you are giving your little one a strong emotional foundation for their future. Our approach isn’t about fixing problems—it’s about setting families up for success, now and in the future.
We’re committed to making GES available to every family —because every parent can learn something new, and every baby deserves a good start. We offer a free, welcoming space where you can discover the positive impact your bond has during those first 1,001 days of life. Together we will celebrate your journey and offer you a guiding hand so you can give your child a good enough start in life.

Our Story
Good Enough Start is a collaboration between The Partnership of Millom Schools (PoMS); a group of eight schools in Millom and the surrounding areas that work together to support pupils, parents, and staff, North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust 0-19 Services, and Howgill Family Centre. Launched as a pilot service in 2018, We aim to bring together local education, healthcare, and family support to provide a holistic start for families in the Millom community with a parent-Infant relationship focus.
In April 2021, The High Sheriff of Cumbria, Julie Barton, congratulated Good Enough Start, 'Your organisation stood out for its excellent work and I am very pleased to inform you that the Good Enough Start Project is among a small number of charities across Cumbria whom I have selected to receive a High Sheriff Award this year.' We also received £500 which funded a printed information booklet!

After launching our new service during the pandemic in 2020 we had to adapt to lockdown restrictions and as of October 2021, our full universal preventative service began. We're delighted to offer the full range of support from universal groups to 1:1 therapeutic support empowering parents to support their baby's emotional needs and strengthen the parent-infant relationship.

In 2022, Francis C Scott Trust named Janice Brockbank and Brenda Holden as joint recipients of the 2022 Peter Scott Award for Outstanding Contribution to Charity with special regard to their joint work on the Good Enough Start project.
